Coalfields £25,000 Will Help Whitecross Shape its Future
Whitecross took the first steps towards shaping its future at the launch of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s highly successful Coalfields Community Futures programme.
Whitecross is one of five former mining communities selected to take part in this year’s programme which helps local people draw up and implement a five-year action plan, with £25,000 of seed corn funding available from the Trust to get top priority projects off the ground.
Local residents and interested businesses came together to form the Whitecross Community Action Group which will organise the survey and draw up the action plan.
Spokesman Iain Waters said: “We are carrying out a household survey to find out residents views – what they like, what they don’t like and what they think needs to be done to make Whitecross a better place to live and work in.”
Over 15 local people have volunteered to distribute and collect survey forms from all households in the area and the survey should be going out at the end of August/early September.
The results will be displayed at a community wide event to be held in November and after that decisions will be made on the best way to use the funds.
Chair of the Steering Group Mandy Lang said ‘ We will be producing a Community Action Plan based on local views – that will set out local priorities for Whitecross over the next 5 years.
“Our aim will be to use the plan in negotiations with developers, and when we are seeking funding for community projects – it will be important that as many people as possible take part to give the plan some weight.”
Nicky Wilson, Scottish Trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust said: “We are delighted to welcome Whitecross to the Coalfields Communities Futures Programme.
“Local people will have a real say in what they would like to see happen to make their area a better place to live, work and visit and we will help them make their vision a reality.
“We believe the Coalfieds Community Futures programme is local democracy at its very best.”
The initiative is being supported by Falkirk Council who helped the group make the application to the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and who will be working with the group to develop the Plan and involve local people in the process.
